Witness consciousness as a concept and a spiritual practice has become better known now in the West. In the psychology of Advaita and Yoga of thousands of years ago, it has always been a fundamental tool for self development and self understanding on the path to Self-Realization.

Meeting Nisargadatta Maharaj: By Dr. Lakshyan Schanzer

A classic and original article about meeting Nisargadatta Maharaj in 1978 by Dr. Lakshyan Schanzer. All the pictures of Nisargadatta Maharaj were taken by Dr. Schanzer. At the end, the author is shown sitting with Maharaj.

By Dr. Lakshyan Schanzer

My name is Lakshyan Schanzer. I have been practicing and teaching yoga and meditation since 1971. I am also a psychologist and practice a meditative approach to psychotherapy. This is my first writing about my experiences with Nisargadatta Maharaj.

By 1978 I had been practicing and teaching for about 7 years (primarily Integral Yoga) and had reached a ‘wall’ in my practice. I was having wonderful experiences/results on a daily basis. Yet, for me, these experiences were just that; only experiences. Yes, they were important and healing ones, bringing revelations and insights into my history, release of deep feelings, or guidance about the coming day or accurate premonitions about the future.

However, as I became accustomed to ‘pushing the buttons’ that generated these experiences, I began to ask myself: “Was there any value beyond these temporary conditioning effects of regular practice? That is, if we experience…

Self-inquiry and Surrender: By Dr. Suryanarayana Raju

Bhagavan Ramana

Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi, untill his realization in Madurai, outwardly lead a life of average human being. At his school he is was more interested in games than studies. His performance at school was average. Some of the things noted about Bhagavan are that his sleep was very deep and that he was quite taken by the devotion of the 63 Saivite saints.

At the time of his death experience Sri Ramana did Self-inquiry spontaneously without knowing that it was Self-inquiry. He was witnessing the event of  death with full awareness.

The Tao We Speak Of Is Not Real: By Dr. Harsh K. Luthar

The wise say that the Tao that can be talked about is not The True Tao. Still Sages such as Bhagavan Ramana manage to indicate the existence of the underlying Reality with words and without words.

Self-Realized sages point to the Truth easily and spontaneously. Knowledge of Reality is not just their first hand knowledge but their very Being.

Bhagavan Ramana, through his silence, words, and actions, was always pointing at the highest reality, the Heart of existence, the Self. Even in minor things like giving instructions on cooking and eating food, cutting wood, or other matters, Bhagavan was doing that.  Sages like that are more than just satsang givers, good public speakers, and charismatic orators. Krishna is AtmA by S.N. Sastri

In the gItA Krishna speaks as Brahman and not as an individual or even as an incarnation. He is referred to in the gItA as bhagavAn which means saguNa brahman. The meaning of the word Krishna has been given in a popular verse thus: ‘kRRiSh’ stands for Existence and ‘Na’ for Bliss. The union of the two is Krishna, the Supreme Brahman. In Srimad bhAgavatam it is said – krishnastu bhagvAn svayam—Krishna is bhagavan Himself, contrasting him with all the other incarnations which are said to be only part-manifestations (amsha avatAra).
