Many Things Are Going On: By Dr. Harsh K. Luthar

Quan Yin 0 Avalotiksvara

Harsha's avatarLuthar.com

The usual things are going on in many places.

War, hate, and killing of enemies

in order to love, protect, and nurture ones own.

Inflicting punishment on others

yet remaining free of consequences

is not possible for us

as human beings or nations;

for the revenge that brings joy

also brings grief.

This is the nature of our suffering,

that we believe our sorrows are more precious

than the tears of our enemies.

The story of life is written on the faces

of both the watching and the watched.

Paralysis provides the context

for the breaking news stories on the dinner table.

It does not help that our fingers

cannot touch across the television screens

and the eyes cannot meet to offer consolation.

Guilt serves as a buffer for one

for the other, hope underlies fear.

Closure is never at hand in this sphere of duality.

This Nonsense Makes Perfect Sense

HKL-Lamp of the Heart

In  2001, one of my students gave me a book “The Enlightened Heart” edited by Stephen Mitchell. Looking through it this morning I came across several beautiful poems. I wanted to share one with you from Lao Tzu that speaks my heart:

Some say my teaching is nonsense.

Others call it lofty but impractical.

But to those who have looked inside themselves,

this nonsense makes perfect sense.

And those who put it into practice

this loftiness has roots that go deep.

I have just three things to teach:

Simplicity, patience, compassion.

These three are your greatest treasures.

Simple in actions and in thoughts,

you return to the source of being.

Patient with both friends and enemies

You accord with the way things are,

Compassionate towards yourself,

you reconcile all beings in the world.

If you are true, then sing through me

Only We Know: By Belle Heywood

Belle Heywood the Boddhisattva

This morning you touched me so tenderly

I was the first ever dandelion
in the fingers of the first ever dawn.

It was the first morning on Earth.
In your gentleness the sun was born.

But only we know.

My Teacher: By Dr. Evan Keith

I felt something come from under the bathroom sink onto my foot.

Like the dance of water it felt.

When I looked down, I saw you. I felt revulsion and disgust.

Is it a crime for one’s form to look so ugly to me?  Continue reading
