During my stay at a beautiful Ashram in America long years ago, I was consumed with worry about my future. You see, I had jumped out of the mainstream by quitting a great job in Manhattan, sold my lovely apartment, left good friends behind, and landed in the Himalayas without a parachute in the middle of a grueling winter. From there, still restless and seeking, I had moved around in both East and West, on a quest for that perfect refuge where I could focus on my creative and spiritual goals. As someone who is herself running a bit too fast these days (and by a bit I mean waaaay too much), I’m fascinated by the concept of self-care as if from a distance. “I will have time for that someday” has been my subconscious dialogue. This state of affairs is of course unsustainable, and this weekend, which I had carved out to continue working, did not go as planned as I had multiple signs from the universe to put on the brakes and slow down.
There is a tetrad of questions a medicine person in a shamanic culture would ask me if I went to them in my stressed out mode: “When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?”
